Castles - Edinburgh and The Lothians

Blackness Castle

Built in the 15th century by one of Scotland’s most powerful families, the Crichtons, Blackness was never destined as a peaceful lordly residence; its enduring roles were those of garrison fortress and state prison.

Craigmillar Castle
A well preserved medieval castle, Craigmillar has a tower house, courtyard and gardens.

Dalhousie Castle

Dalhousie Castle and Aqueous Spa. A fascinating 13th century fortress set within acres of wooded parkland on the picturesque banks of the river Esk.

Dirleton Castle and Gardens

This castle has been at the heart of Dirleton since the 13th Century. The garden includes the world’s longest herbaceous border.

Edinburgh Castle
Perched on an extinct volcano, this instantly recognisable fortress is a powerful national symbol and part of Old and New Towns of Edinburgh World Heritage Site. Its story is Scotland's story.

Lauriston Castle Lauriston Castle is set in 30 acres of parkland and formal gardens with spectacular views overlooking the Firth of Forth.

Linlithgow Palace
The magnificent ruins of Linlithgow Palace are set in a park beside a loch.
