The National Galleries of Scotland, a collection of Scottish and international are housed in five galleries across the city including The Portrait Gallery, The Gallery of Modern Art and The Dean Gallery. They are open daily and entrance is free.
There are many museums in the city including The Museum of Edinburgh. This is a series of interconnected 16th and 17th century buildings formerly known as Huntly House. The museum specialises in the history of Edinburgh from the earliest settlement to the present day.
For wildlife lovers a short drive out to East Lothian is a must. Here you can visit the many beaches and the Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick, where you can observe an abundance of seabirds and marine wildlife - and there's always something new to see - puffins and gannets with chicks in spring and summer and seals with pups in winter.
